BlackBerry PlayBook 2.1.0 Beta for Developers Launches

Today we are releasing a beta of BlackBerry® Tablet OS 2.1.0 for developers to test their applications with. Developers can test using devices or a simulator, and there are some items that I think will be of particular interest.
The WebKit implementation on BlackBerry Tablet OS continues to keep pace with the latest updates to the WebKit project. There are numerous updates included which keep the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet at the forefront for Tablet Browsers in the market, as seen by our HTML5 Test Score (391 and 10 bonus points).

For a complete change log Inside Blackberry Developer Blog

Warning: Only proceed with this upgrade if you are a developer that needs to test applications on BlackBerry PlayBook OS This upgrade supports applications developed using the following platforms: BlackBerry Native SDK 2.x or earlier, BlackBerry WebWorks, BlackBerry Tablet SDK for Adobe AIR 2.x or earlier.

CIBC and Rogers Unveil the Future of Mobile Payments in Canada with BlackBerry 7

Some of the key features of the new mobile payments solution include:

Clients will receive the same fraud protection they do with their contactless credit card, and secure encryption technology will add to the layers of security already in place on credit card purchases. Clients will also have the option to set additional password protection.
  • No "stickers" on your phone - this new payment capability will leverage the secure SIM card inside a mobile device for payments, meaning clients can manage their credit card credentials on a secure platform, and won't need to worry about stickers attached to their phone.

WATERLOO, ONTARIO - May 9, 2012) - Research In Motion (RIM) (NASDAQ:RIMM)(TSX:RIM) today announced a stylish new smartphone for socially-connected customers. The new BlackBerry® Curve™ 9320 smartphone features all the core BlackBerry messaging and social-centric features that keep people connected, and it offers global 3G connectivity backed by long battery life to allow users to make the most of their day.
"The new BlackBerry Curve 9320 is designed to make it incredibly easy for users to stay socially-connected," said Carlo Chiarello, EVP, Smartphone Business at Research In Motion. "The new BlackBerry Curve 9320 will be especially popular with customers upgrading to a smartphone for the first time and existing Curve customers looking for a step up in speed and functionality."

Next Generation BlackBerry 7.1 OS

After you turn the BlackBerry Curve 9320 smartphone on and start it up, you’ll notice that it’s running BlackBerry® 7.1 OS. It gives you a smooth and fast BlackBerry smartphone experience, which I noticed most while I was browsing the web. The new OS adds features like Mobile Hotspot (Wi-Fi® sharing), which allows you to connect up to five additional devices*. It also has FM radio so you can tune into your favorite local radio stations.

Peace of mind at your fingertips with Parental Controls

For you parents out there considering the purchase of a smartphone to stay in touch, rest assured that your child or teen can safely use their BlackBerry Curve 9320 smartphone to have fun while giving you peace of minds thanks to new parental controls. With Parental Controls, you have the ability to limit or restrict certain phone numbers, websites, and various social networking apps.
Well, there you have it: three things you should know about the BlackBerry Curve 9320. It’s designed to make messaging and accessing social networks incredibly easy, it’s running the latest BlackBerry OS, and it features handy parental controls for peace of mind. Flix Brings Netflix to the PlayBook for $2.99

The wait is finally over: Flix is a native app that makes Netflix accessible on your BlackBerry PlayBook.
It works by running a small invisible program on your PC and transmitting the video to your PlayBook in real time over Wi-Fi, checkout this videoo give you a sense of how the app works. (Note that the buffering time has been reduced from 40 seconds to 20 seconds)

Current limitations:

  • Your PlayBook must be on the same Wi-Fi network as your computer. (To download the PC app, click here)
  • There is a slight "seam" in the audio every 10 seconds. Sometimes this seam isn't noticeable, but sometimes it is. I hope to eliminate this seam in the audio.
  • This initial version requires a relatively high performance computer, otherwise the audio will contain popping noises. For example, my three year old laptop with an Intel Centrino doesn't appear to be up to the task. I'm investigating solutions to this problem.
  • Flix requires between 1.5 and 10 Mbps transfer speeds between your PC and PlayBook, depending on what quality settings you use, but Wi-Fi requirements are compounded if your Windows PC isn't hard wired into your router, since in that case three transmissions are always occuring: From the Internet to your PC via your router, from your PC back to your router, and from your router to your PlayBook
  • When you are watching a Netflix movie on your PlayBook, the computer's audio is redirected to your PlayBook.
  • Windows PC only. (Mac is not supported)
  • Windows XP is not yet supported. Please use Windows 7 or Windows Vista.
  • There are no player controls such as pause or rewind on the PlayBook at this time. I hope to improve this.
  • Now available in BlackBerry App World

Please note that Flix was not created and is not affiliated with Netflix.
